Pyrite/Calcite Rough

from Michigans upper peninsula.
A calcite based material, the Pyrite in Calcite cuts very easily with diamond or silicon carbide tools.
Polishing Instructions
  • Rough shape and dome with 220 fine wheel with light pressure.
  • Sand with 280, 600, 1200 3000, and 8000 with light to medium pressure. Note: The 8000 wheel is optional, however, it does improve the polish on the Calcite.
  • Final polish - use Raybrite, Alumina powder or Tin Oxide works. As a general rule, you will experirnce slight undercutting due to varying hardness between the Pyrite and Calcite. There will also be a variance in the polish for the same reason. The final cab should display a mirror golden polish on the Pyrite and a good, glossy polish on the Calcite.
